'Speechless' Series Premiere Reviews & News: Critics Are Loving The New Parenting TV Show Featuring A Special Needs Kid

Though entitled "Speechless," this new comedy series is definitely not one to back down from discussing and showing the realities of parenting in today's world. Centered on a special needs kids, "Speechless" is already receiving a lot of raves from critics, ahead of its debut on ABC.

The New York Times notes that while "Speechless" has "predictable material" as a family comedy, it works around an interesting premise: the challenges of a family with a special needs child. The subject of disability has long been drawn out in many drama series, but as a comedy, "Speechless" is giving it a new voice.

The Hollywood Reporter cites that the writing on "Speechless" is funny and makes no use of "overly sentimental representations." The show has a balanced first episode, which should make viewers more eager for what's ahead in the succeeding episodes.

Disability Scoop is content that "Speechless" is helping raise more awareness for cerebral palsy and potentially also helping patients understand their condition better. In the show, 16-year-old JJ DiMeo is challenged by the disability and is also nonverbal. The actor playing the character, Micah Fowler, has cerebral palsy in real life. Entertainment Weekly tags the Fowler as this season's breakout star.

USA Today cites that, aside from unique premise and good writing, the cast of "Speechless" seem to gel well together. The DiMeos will be the TV family viewers will want to see on their screens every week.

Hit Fix calls "Speechless" another "winning comedy" for ABC. The premiere episode is far from being perfect, but the DiMeo family is likeable.

"Speechless" is led by Minnie Driver, who plays the fierce special needs mom that fights for her son's rights. John Ross Bowie plays her supportive husband Jimmy, while the rest of the DiMeo kids are played by Mason Cook (Ray) and Kyla Kenedy (Dylan). The show is created by Scott Silveri.

Catch the premiere of "Speechless" on ABC this Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. Check back on this site for more news and updates.
