‘Pokémon GO’ Cheats, Tips & Tricks: Odd Incense Trick Lets You Catch Rare Pokémon Vulpix, Ponyta, Abra, Dratini & More

It's not always easy to catch rare Pokémon in "Pokémon GO." A new theory that involves a weird use of Incense, however, is claiming that it will spawn plenty of rare Pokémon in uncommon places.

Incense is a consumable "Pokémon GO" item that can both be purchased from the Store and gained as level rewards, according to IGN. Putting an Incense at a PokéStop attracts more Pokémon to a player, with its effects lasting for 30 minutes.

A "Pokémon GO" player shared an Incense theory on Reddit's The Silph Road thread last month, BGR reported. In it, the user recounted how he and his girlfriend spent a day on the coast far from civilization, with the game's Pokémon radar completely blank.

The user, however, encountered the rare Pokémon Vulpix after putting down an Incense. After a while, more rare Pokémon popped up including Digletts, Ponyta, and two Dragonairs.

The "Pokémon GO" player once again tested his theory while in a secluded lake, which also serves as a PokéStop. While he's there, the user placed Incense and Lures and just like before, an overwhelming amount of rare Pokémon appeared.

This time, he caught Abras, Charmanders, Bulbasaurs, Dratinis, Vulpix, Mr. Mime, and Onyx, among others. Other times he captured Ivysaur, Growlithe, Omanyte, and Pikachu. He noted that all kinds of Pokémon spawn arrived regardless of where he was (near bodies of water or in a forest, among others).

The "Pokémon GO" user said using Incense in PokéStops in the city only generated Rattatas, Pidgeys, and Weedles. These creatures all belong to the game's most common Pokémon that can be spotted everywhere.

Other "Pokémon GO" players supported the user's Incense theory. They claimed that random Pokémon pop up even though the Nearby list is empty -- as long as an Incense is being used.

Some users on other The Silph Road threads claimed that this Incense trick works best when a player is at least one kilometer away from the nearest Pokémon spawn point. This way, plenty of rare Pokémon will appear for you to catch.
