'Rainbow Baby' Shirt: A Movement That Honors Pregnancy Loss That Went Viral By Chance

Miscarriage is one of the most painful struggles every mother would have to go through. It may seem like it the end for them but it was a beginning of an unexpected friendship as they were linked by their pregnancy loss experience.

Autumn Safley and Courtney Mixon's story may be a bit far out as their friendship started with grief. It was when Safley and Mixon crossed paths inside a shopping center. Though it may seem like a regular afternoon as they were both strangers, Safley's shirt changed their fate.

"I bought it after my first miscarriage with intentions of wearing it when I was pregnant again, but I lost the second baby, and never got an opportunity to wear it," Safley tells TODAY Parents. "I found it in my closet ... and I was like, I'm going to wear this..."

Safley then states that she and Courtney Mixon caught each other's attention as Mixon seemed glued to her shirt. Safley then added that Mixon openly shared that she too, lost her child.

"We made eye contact," Safley told Today. "And she had these big ole tears in her eyes, and I walked over to her." "'I know what your shirt means ... my husband and I lost our baby last year, and we've been trying to conceive.' '"

It may seem like a small talk but both mothers who lost their children made a mutual connection. After they both shared a brief background of their individual miscarriages, Mixon asked Safley if she could take a photo of her, with which Safley agreed.

Courtney Mixon then uploaded the photo where she narrated Safley's experience through the caption. Both strangers were eventually linked by a mutual friend as Autumn's photo with a Rainbow Baby shirt made rounds online.

Miscarriage may be a depressing moment for any mother but picking up the pieces and spreading out love and light to women who went through the same grief can definitely go a long way.
