21st Century Dads More Involved In Parenting? Their Contributions And Effects To Child Development

Gone are days where dads only work for the family and the moms are left taking care of the children. Nowadays, there are dads who play an active participation in parenting.

Some modern dads showed improvement on parenting compared to their own fathers, the news site Parenting found out. Some fathers reportedly took the responsibility of babycare tasks like changing their kid's diaper at night or preparing their milk formulas, however, the accountability doesn't only stop there.

Both parents have individual roles in rearing their children but according to Mel Gibson's parenting theory, the mother's role is tougher. In the "Blood Father" actor's case, he played an active role in his kids' lives but he thought that more than anything else, they needed their mother's love, The Hamilton Spectator learned.

It is note-worthy, however, that a father's love qualitatively different from a mother's love. A dads' love is more expectant and instrumental, hence, the difference on the way they contribute to parenting.

Dr. Kyle Pruett, a fathering expert, stated that fathers have a distinct communication style and ways of interaction with their children from the mothers. Focus on the Family reported that this diversity will provide them with a wider and meaningful experience of different relational interactions which is critical for their development.

Fathers also play differently. It has been reported that the active play that includes chasing, tickling, playing as scary monsters and wresting will help the kids learn a healthy balance between being timid and aggressive.

In addition, psychologists believe that more fathers observe and implement rules in a systematized and strict way. Combine this with the sympathetic and gracious ways of how mothers are disciplining their child will create a healthy and proper balance in the family.

Finally, many believe that fathers help prepare their children in facing the harshness of the real world and that the attitudes and behaviours have their corresponding consequences. In conclusion, one must remember that parenting doesn't just fall on either parents.

The presence and active participation of both the mother and father are essential to the healthy development of their child. So, here's a bonus video that depicts the difference of parenting styles between moms and dads. Enjoy!
