'Superman' Prequel Release Date, News & Update: Series Explores The Past Of Krypton?

Following the success of the series" Gotham", which tells the story of Gotham City before there was Batman, a new "Superman" series similar to the prequel style that "Gotham" makes use is in development. According to Cinemablend, the series takes place decades before the birth of Superman. It will give fans a glimpse of Superman's home planet Krypton from the point of view of Superman's grandfather as he attempts to unify Krypton under a peaceful rule.

Though there have been many "Superman" related series that have been produced such as "Supergirl" and "Smallville", none have attempted to explore the distant past of Krypton. Following the formula of Gotham, "Krypton" aims to look at the events that transpired before the planet Krypton was destroyed and what caused it.

The producer for the series is David Goyer, who also produced the most recent "Superman" film, "Man of Steel." Co-producing the series along with Goyer is Ian Goldberg who was one of the writers for the series "Once Upon a Time."

The new series, named "Krypton", will showcase characters from the original Krypton story like Seg-El, Val-El, and Lyta Zod. Although not much news has been divulged about the new "Superman" series yet, The Wrap has confirmed that Cameron Cuffe will be playing the role of Seg-El, Superman's ancestor and the main character of the series.

It has also been confirmed that Georgina Campbell will be cast as Lyta Zod, the ancestor of "Superman" villain General Zod. The series had already started development during last October but has only revealed details early this year.

No further details about the other cast members and the air date of the "Superman" Prequel Pilot episode have been announced yet. The "Superman" Prequel Pilot episode will be directed by Colm McCarthy, who is also known for directing "Dr. Who" and "Injustice." Moreover, "Krypton" will also be written by both David Goyer and Ian Goldberg.
