Sony News Update: Original PlayStation 3 Owners To Receive $55 From Sony

Own a Fat PlayStation 3? You might be entitled to some cash from Sony.

If you bought and owned a PlayStation 3 in the United States from an authorized reseller between November 1, 2006, and April 1, 2010, you are considered a Class Member. If so, you may be eligible to claim a cash payment from Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA).

A class action lawsuit was filed against SCEA contesting a release of a firmware update disabling the Other Operating Systems (Other OS) function in Fat PlayStation 3 model consoles. The Other OS feature allows running Linux as an alternative OS on Fat PS3. According to SCEA, the update did not do any harm but the court has yet to give its judgment.

The lawsuit asserts that the "update" was an unjust business practice and false advertisement. It pursues recovery of damages through money to compensate for the loss of the feature and functionality.

FAT PlayStation 3 owners a.k.a. the Class Members may submit their claims in court on or before Dec. 7, 2016. These claims must come with attestations.

Class Members who will present claims with proof of purchase and proof of use of the Other OS are entitled to receive $55 from Sony. Those who will submit claims with proof of purchase and verify their intent to use the Other OS feature, or suppose they were injured, might receive $9.

SCEA will provide these payments to the owners once the settlement is final and approved. The amount of what the owners will be getting will depend on which class they belong.

Class Members who are eligible to receive cash should be a member of either Consumer Class A or Consumer Class B. There is a list of requirements to be submitted to the Settlement Administrator. To know more about it, you may check the details here.
