Mel Gibson Reveals ‘The Passion Of The Christ’ Sequel ‘The Resurrection’ In The Works; Screenplay Writer Randall Wallace On Board

Director Mel Gibson confirmed working on the sequel of the 2004 biblical box office hit "The Passion of the Christ" with screenplay writer Randall Wallace. Gibson reveals that it would focus mainly on Christ's resurrection.

In a surprise guesting at the SoCal Harvest evangelical event, Gibson had an interview with Pastor Greg Laurie. "Of course that's a huge undertaking. It's not 'The Passion 2'," he said. The follow-up film will be entitled "The Resurrection" and is now on its early stages.

"We're getting into some interesting areas on this that, between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, like, what was going on in there," Gibson quipped in a recent sit-down discussion with Pastor Joel Osteen about the awaited "The Passion of the Christ" sequel.

The filmmaker Gibson wants to surprise the viewers. "You do it so that it enlightens. Just some kind of telling, some kind of rendering that suffices is just not good enough," he added.

Though both "The Passion of the Christ" and Gibson have received negative feedback from several social justice, as it is a story of Jesus persecution and crucifixion, it is yet the most successful independent film of all time. The "The Passion of the Christ" starred Jim Caviezel as Jesus, Maia Morgenstern, and Monica Bellucci and has a commercial success earning of $612 million worldwide.

For the religion major screenwriter Wallace, "The Resurrection" is the story he always wanted to tell. "The Passion is the beginning," he said. And that there's a lot more story to tell.

Wallace has worked with Gibson before "The Passion of the Christ." He wrote the script for the 1995 Oscar best picture winner "Braveheart" and was nominated for an Academy Award in Screenplay. They also collaborated again as director and writer in the upcoming film "Hacksaw Ridge," a tale about a Seventh-day Adventist World War II medic Desmond Ross, the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman.
