The 'Wii-U’s' Journey Towards Greatness as Nintendo Ends The Console’s Production

The production of the "Nintendo Wii-U" comes to a permanent halt as Nintendo pulls the plug to make way for the upcoming Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo confirmed the end of Wii-U's Production this week based on the report by Eurogamer. As far as sales go, Nintendo sold 13.36 million Wii-U while the Wii sold 101 million units, N64 with 32 million and the GameCube with 21 million.

The Wii-U was launched at the peak of Nintendo Wii's popularity. The console promises to make the Wii even better and was said to be Nintendo's entry into the next-gen console wars. However, the Wii-U was left behind by the competition in terms of graphical properties, storage, and third-party games.

The Wii-U's selling point was the Wii-U Pad controller which has a built-in 6.2-inch touchscreen with an 854x480 pixel resolution. The Pad has a chunky molded grips and resembles today's tablets and phablets. Despite the cheap plastic feel of the Wii-U Pad was considered as an overrated design for a game controller. Although all the buttons are perfectly usable, the Wii-U Pad will never compare to PlayStation's DualShock and Xbox's Wireless controllers.

After all the disadvantages, the Wii-U console stood up on its own originality by showcasing exclusive games whose main focus is family or group gaming. Wii-U, unlike its competitors, became a party console for all ages. Instead of competing with the two biggest consoles in the market, the underdog created its own path to the wholesome side of the gaming community. Nintendo made use of the console's low graphical quality to create some of the most played games in each genre. Platform Games like "Paper Mario" and "Super Mario 3D World," shooters and FPS like "Splatoon" and "Zombie U," "The Legend of Zelda" for RPG and for E-sports, The "Pokken Tournament" together with "Super Smash Bros." for the Wii-U became two of the most played titles in the fighting game community.

The Wii-U is an example of Nintendo's innovation. Despite the fact that the competition is way ahead of its time, Nintendo never took that as its weakness. Instead of competing, the company focused on its main goal which is entertainment. Although the Wii-U chapter will soon end, the console in its own way became one of gaming history's most important tool in providing some of the most beloved simulations the mortal mind can experience.
