VMA Awards 2015: Parents TV Council Slams MTV Over Miley Cyrus' Hosting, Says It's 'Not Going To Be Safe For Children To Watch'

When MTV announced that they have picked Miley Cyrus to host the 2015 Video Music Awards (VMA), the watch group Parents TV Council (PTC) immediately released a statement in their website, slamming the choice.

"MTV's choice of Miley Cyrus as host for its annual Video Music Awards show makes clear the network's intentions as to what kind of program it intends to air," the statement, through PTC President Tim Winter, read. "If MTV cannot guarantee that the program will be suitable for children, then the network must - must - rate the show TV-MA. Assigning any lower age-rating constitutes an express message to parents, and to corporate sponsors, that the program will be free of explicit material."

Winter has already assumed that the upcoming event will be "profane" and "sexually explicit" according to Gossip Cop, and its current rating of TV-14 is a huge concern for the PTC.

The president of the group has teenage kids of his own and believes that the producers of the awards show will be ramping the gimmicks for its advertisers. "And based on everything we've seen Miley doing in recent years, she certainly seems angry and certainly seems enjoying being the provocateur," Winter told Gossip Cop.

Back in 2013, when Miley was a performer at the same awards show, the PTC slammed MTV and the pop star after her controversial and provocative number. She twerked and teased Robin Thicke during her performance, prompting PTC to denounce what millions of viewers saw.

"MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate 'twerking' in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?" PTC said in its statement two years ago, according to Hollywood Life.

In announcing her hosting stint this year, Miley candidly took jabs at her previous shocking performance by posting a photo of herself on her Instagram, holding two boards that read: "MTV WON'T LET ME PERFORM" and "SO I'M HOSTING THIS YEAR'S VMA'S"

Meanwhile, Winter clarified that he's not against the celebrity and he understands that her performance can be provocative. He also said that Miley could be a good host, given that she's capable. "She's smart. She's talented. She knows how to turn it up, turn it down if she so chooses," Winter said to Gossip Cop.

But all the PTC wants is simple and clear: "Don't show explicit content and rate it as appropriate for children."
