Importance Of Reading: Helping A Toddler Become An Avid Reader

Sculpting a child's personality on positive nodes is every parents' ambition out there. Most parents want their children to become good readers but are not able to invest time to make this possible. The most efficient way and perhaps the first step to make a child an avid reader or obsessed with books is to read aloud at a tender age.

The first step doesn't involve a child to start reading. All good things take time, don't they? Once they start listening intently to book stories that their parents read out to them, they'll automatically get more curious about reading. Initiating a drive of reading is the most important step to help children become good readers.

Even if a child is too young to understand the words being said out loud, they will observe how the parent is reading out a story to them. This is why it's crucial for a parent to not just read out aloud for the sake of it but rather make a performance out of it.

A voice filled with enthusiasm and energy along with hand gestures pique a child's interest and helps him understand the storyline even if they don't understand certain words being uttered. Soon enough, a parent will start noticing that their kid gets all excited everytime he or she sees a new book cover, eager to know what'll pan out in each new story.

According to Early Childhood News, a research conducted by The National Institute for Literacy stated, "Reading aloud to children has been called the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for success in reading."

By giving the children positive reading experiences, parents can encourage their children to continually gain knowledge and enhance their understanding of the world around them. In this manner, little minds become receptive to all the knowledge that comes their way.

Now, another important aspect of training a child who loves reading is the selection of books. No need to fret over this because there's a wide array of books written specifically to intrigue young minds.

When a child is two years old, parents ought to get books made out of cardboard. Books that have things popping out of them as each page is turned are also effective in keeping a child entertained.

Books with bright colored fruits and vegetables are also quite liked by infants. When entering age three to five, parents should select books that illustrate very simple concepts for a child to understand. As per Early Moments, sensory books with textures and pop-ups are also advised by psychologists. Different textured books help kids differentiate and understand variations in environments better.

It's advisable to always keep asking questions while you're reading to the child. It keeps the child involved in reading-time and further helps him learn faster. Ask questions like "What color is this?" or "What is the boy in the picture doing under the tree?" These questions gauge a child's attention towards the book, inclining them to develop a habit of reading overtime.
