New Age Smartphone Battery Charges "In Seconds", Lasts For A Week; "Supercapacitor" Stores More Power Than Traditional Lithium-Ion Batteries

Modern Smartphones may have the biggest RAM, the latest processor chip and the clearest camera, but it still relies on its battery to do the things that they're supposed to do. Suffice to say, your device will be no more than just a toy if it always brings up the battery low warning and you'll have to rush and get your charger.

Battery life is a problem every user and OEMs face on a daily basis. Up until now, there's no technology that could stretch a device's usage, especially if the user is too dependent. Luckily for us, scientists from the University of Central Florida (UCF) have developed a "supercapacitor battery" that could store more power and charge faster at the same time.

Android Authority quoted UCF Postdoctoral Associate Nitin Choundhary's claim that the novel battery will have the ability to charge a Smartphone "in only a few seconds". It's a big claim, to say the least, but it gets better. The technology will also make the device last "for at least a week" without charging. If that's not enough, the battery itself will be able to withstand more than 3,000 charging cycles "without degrading."

Digital Trends meanwhile said that the battery Choundhary and co. have created is "20 times as long" as the ones we have on your mobile devices. What makes it unique, or rather, "super" as compared to lithium-ion batteries is that it stores electricity on the surface of the material, rather than storing it "through chemical reactions". Based on their experiments, the team used 2D metal and wrapped it in conductive wires. Basically, this allows electrons to flow from the energy core to its shell "quickly and easily."

So far, the concept is more than just good news, and it's not hard to imagine what users can do with a battery that charges in seconds and lasts for a week. Then again, the technology is still in its early stage; it'll take some time before the team from UCF will be able to mass-produce their discovery. They will still have to battle through patents and other commercial requirements before the next flagship Smartphone will have this battery.
