‘Star Trek: Discovery’ News & Updates: ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Michelle Yeoh Given ‘Captain’ Role

International martial arts action star and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" actress Michelle Yeoh has been cast in a command role on the new "Star Trek" television series, "Star Trek: Discovery." Michelle Yeoh is the first actor to be named to the cast. Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian actor best known for her role in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

According to Deadline, "Star Trek: Discovery" will be based along the same story universe as the "Star Trek: Enterprise." This will be a prequel to the "Star Trek" universe as it is told in the movies and on TV. The events of the "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Star Trek: Discovery" happens a hundred years before the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew.

Digitalspy reports that "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" Michelle Yeoh will be called "Number 1" in the "Star Trek: Discovery" series. It is interesting to note that "Number 1" has been used before in an episode of "Star Trek (ST:TOS)" and in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

In "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Commander Riker, Jonathan Frakes, is called "Number 1" by Captain Jean-Luc Picard played by Patrick Stewart. In another piece of information, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" Michelle Yeoh will portray Han Bo and will be part of the crew of the Shenzou and not of the Discovery.

There have been several TV series about "Star Trek." The first one is the original "Star Trek" which was shown during the 1960s with William Shatner as Kirk. From the 1980s to the 1990s, a sequel series was shown on TV, "Star Trek: Next Generation." The series had Patrick Stewart as Picard as its captain.

This was followed by "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," which had Avery Smith as Captain Benjamin Sisko. The first "Star Trek" with a female lead followed was titled "Star Trek: Voyager" and starred Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway. The last "Star Trek" series on TV was "Star Trek: Enterprise" with Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer. Chris Pine portrayed in Jim Kirk in the "Star Trek" movie franchise.
