‘The Crown’ News: Netflix Original Series Queen Elizabeth's Wedding Gown Cost $37,000, Took Six Weeks To Make

Netflix original series "The Crown" may seem to have spent all of its $130 million budget wisely. Imagine $37,000 alone going to a replica of Queen Elizabeth's wedding gown. The Netflix royal drama, "The Crown," went to great lengths to ensure that the scenes were historically accurate and that included the costumes.

Pop Sugar reported that the 10-episode series "The Crown" starring Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth and "Doctor Who" Matt Smith as Prince Philip is the most expensive Netflix production to date. "The Crown" production team created an exact replica of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding dress. The dress was made of ivory silk with pearl and crystal embellishments.

The original Royal wedding dress, the Netflix original series "Crown" was inspired by, was designed by royal couturier Normal Hartnell and took six months to make. The Royal Dress was elaborately embroidered with a star lily and orange blossom patterns. Truly fit for royalty, it was encrusted with 10,000 seed pearls which were brought in from America. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were married in November 1947. Being a post-war wedding, the cost of the dress was not disclosed at that time due to austerity measures, noted Harpers Bazaar.

The version of the royal wedding dress used in Netflix original series "The Crown" took six weeks to make and "weighed a ton" according to Claire Foy, in an interview with The Telegraph. "For this young woman to be wearing all that and then have the composure to walk through the Abbey full of dignitaries and heads of state, and then having to be anointed... It must have taken huge gumption," she said.

Apart from the costumes, Netflix original series "The Crown" also took great pains to recreate the era in terms of set design. Not a few vintage cars were used in filming the series. The cinematography was also impressive and appealing in its muted simplicity. Season 2 of "The Crown" has already started filming and will be released on November 2017.
