Why Black Children And Teens Are More Exposed To Junk Food Ads Than White Kids

As the United States struggles to fight the prevalence of obesity, a new study revealed it has remarkably affected the African-American communities. According to the reports, researchers found out watching too many advertisements on television networks may have a negative impact on people, especially children.

Information from The Washington Post says the ads of junk food are targeting black children and teens. As the reports say, watching too many junk food advertisements among kids is currently a big issue as half of the black children are overweight and obese.

Studies found that black children watch 50 percent more TV than white children. The findings also determined what type of television shows or programs the children watch and the effects it have on their minds.

The retailers are often targeting children through the channels and networks they watch the most. Black people also watch more youth-targeted networks like VH1, BET etc. These are also the channels that air the most food advertisements.

Moreover, a number of tests found a clear relation between food marketing and a kid's preference. However, junk food ads raise the desire in children to eat sugary food or any other sort of junk food and overeating of junk food can cause obesity and are not good for a child's health.

Almost all of the food ads introduced on TV are luring the children, that is why the popularity of the product increases. According to The Root, strict rules should be implemented by the government to reduce the amount of junk food ads on TV.

The main target of any junk food company is to sell the product in a vast amount, the problems are then created for the parents who have to deal with their child's desires and obesity that reach to an extreme level after some time. Hence, junk food ads should be limited.
