Why Crib Advertisements Show Kids In Dangerous Sleeping Environments

Suffocation hazards like thick fluffy blankets with attractive colors and toys are often shown in ads, where babies are sleeping and are surrounded by such these stuff. The babies also have a specific sleeping posture in which they sleep on their tummies and not on their backs.

These ad makers, however, do not know what they are showing. These things increase the risks of deaths during sleeping. According to The EWN News, the highest cause of infant death rates is due to sudden infant deaths syndrome.

Even if the rate of these syndromes has decreased during the last many years, it is still the number one cause of death among babies. However, mothers have tried curbing the problem by making their babies sleep on their backs, as most doctors have suggested.

Breastfeeding is promoted and encouraged while awareness is being raised about which blankets and toys to use and where to keep them while the baby is sleeping. Advertisements also show which crib mattresses are good to use.

To some extent, the conditions have been somewhat better. In the nineties, around 56-57 percent toddlers were shown sleeping in a posture that caused Sudden Instant Death Syndrom or SIDS but now, only forty percent of babies are shown sleeping like this in advertisements.

As per Reuters, most of the white kids were shown sleeping in a safe posture. But in the ads in which white babies were not featured, the dangerous and unsafe postures were still promoted.

The researchers know that different companies do not want to encourage sleeping postures. Sadly, the companies are not aware of the impacts and the outcomes.

It's an undeniable fact that some manufacturers and advisors prefer their money and profits over the health and safety of the kids. But they should understand what this might lead too and the infant's health should be made a priority.
