IVF: What To Consider Before Resorting To This Treatment

Couples who have tried to get pregnant for months or years without success might want to consider other options such as IVF or In Vitro Fertilization. While this can make pregnancy a reality, it can be a bit costly and emotionally draining due to the procedure involved.

Prosper Marketplace conducted a survey and found out that around 60 percent of women who think of IVF as an option worry about the treatment cost. Experts believe those who are considering IVF should resort to the procedure as a last option when all else has failed.

A complete medical check-up with the OB-GYN is a must to rule out the existence of uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other medical conditions. The Naturopathic Approach to Fertility author Julissa Hernandez says that the doctor should also check for estrogen dominance and endometriosis.

Half of infertility problems among couples, according to Fox News, are due to the male factor so it is important to get the sperm checked. The Human Reproduction journal published a study, which shows that while men contribute to the infertility problem, only 51 percent of the factors for this risk are identified by them. This calls for a thorough semen analysis to check for the movement of the sperm, shape, volume and count.

If the couple is found healthy upfront but still could not get pregnant, then they can check out if there is a need to take a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) test to check if the fallopian tubes are blocked. This test can help increase fertility for the next three months although it would not hurt to ask the doctor for a fertility medication.

American Pregnancy said that through the IVF process, the egg and sperm are combined manually in a laboratory, and then transferred to the uterus once fertilized. Patients resort to IVF when pregnancy becomes difficult due to blocked fallopian tubes, sperm health problems, ovarian problems, genetic problems or other infertility problems that could not be explained.

The success rate of IVF procedures can vary depending on the program used. So Advanced Fertility said it is important to discuss the details and success rates of the chosen program with a doctor before availing of the procedure. If the couple has resorted to almost all methods to get pregnant but still failed, then it might be time to consider IVF as an option.
