Movie Review: How Director Garth Davis And Dev Patel Journeyed Through Saroo’s Life In 'Lion'

“Lion” is based on a true story; a story that’s too incredible to be true. The story follows the life of Saroo Brierley, an Indian boy, in the 1980s. One night got lost almost 1,000 miles from his home.

The trailer shows that Saroo got lost while waiting for his brother in the train station. He accidentally rode a train which led him somewhere far from home.

Eventually, he was adopted by an Australian couple. He still remembers his family and, luckily, with the advent of technology, he used Google Earth to track them down in “Lion,” Denver Post reports.

Critics consider that this is one of the best characters that Dev Patel had portrayed. Being the adult Saroo allowed him to walk the life of a man who was unsure of who he is and got Golden Globe nomination with this character.

However, “Lion” wasn’t only Patel’s journey, as it was also everyone’s journey, especially Garth Davis. Garth describes the film as a “ridiculous story,” but is full of love and that’s what makes it a great film.

One of the challenges that Garth had in filming the movie was that he didn’t have any prior experiences in making a film. Aside from this, it was also a challenge to work with a five-year-old. However, it was also a “beautiful form” Garth added in an interview with Deadline.

Nonetheless, he managed to direct “Lion” by immersing himself with Saroo’s roots in Kolkata, India. He was able to learn how the community unites in the village and that played an important role in directing the film.

“Lion” is nominated for best picture in film drama category for the 2016 Golden Globe Awards. The film was one of the films that premiered in Europe last September. Recently, the film just won the Diversity in Film Award in Zurich Film Festival.
