Drunkenness Diverting Resources From Emergencies? NHS Head Warns Binge Drinkers To Be Unselfish On New Year's Eve

Simon Stevens, the Head of the National Health Services in the United Kingdom, lately expressed anger over the fact that the increasing number of alcoholics and drinkers in the nation was utilizing important resources that could be spent elsewhere more usefully. Stevens was also reported to condemn these carefree drinkers for turning the "health services" into "hangover services."

Even though the issue of drinking is not new at all, the extremely large amount of party-goers and people who venture out to celebrate the New Year's Eve, most of the pubs, hotels, bars and clubs in England are brimming with drunk people. As a result, there are swarms of people in the hospitals late at night or in the morning as they seek medications for their drunkenness, according to The Guardian.

Coupled with the added emergencies the harsh winter season brings, this drinking problem only worsens the situation at hand by diverting the resources allocated from other more serious medical conditions for the treatment of hangovers. Further voicing his opinion to Independent UK, Simon Stevens said that one of the highest cases of drinking is reported on the New Year's Eve.

This is already a time of great stress due to the problems brought forth by the weather and it is quite selfish of the public to drink carelessly that they end up in the Accident & Emergency department of the hospitals, Stevens added. Not only Stevens, the staff at the hospitals also gets very irritated by a lot of drunken people at such critical times.

The main reason for this anger and complaint is that important medical and physical amenities, which can be used to help people who have encountered serious accidents, are wasted on the drinkers. It should be mentioned that the drinking rates are really high in the United Kingdom, along with Denmark and Hungary.
