Barbara Bush Wants Betsy DeVos As Education Secretary, Believes She's An 'Educator At Heart'

Donald Trump's education secretary nominee, Betsy DeVos, has gotten a big endorsement from Barbara Bush. The former first lady said that she's believes DeVos has "real compassion for children" and believes that she will be effective for the Education sector.

Bush wrote her endorsement of DeVos in a piece on Press Herald. She cited that she has closely worked with DeVos in the past and has seen first-hand that the nominee's advocacy has always been about children and education.

"She has fought valiantly to give parents of at-risk children the right to send their kids to charter and private schools when the public school system is letting them down," the former first lady wrote in her piece. She also called DeVos an "educator at heart" even as critics point out that she was never a teacher.

DeVos also has another Bush rooting for her for the important post in Jeb Bush. He sent his endorsement via a letter to the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, according to Tampa Bay.

Jeb cited that he's known and worked with DeVos for over 20 years, especially since she's on the board of the Bush's Foundation for Excellence in Education. "Betsy will pursue every opportunity to improve all of our nation's schools and empower states, districts and parents to maximize the number of high-quality learning opportunities available to our kids," Jeb Bush said.

The endorsements come as DeVos' confirmation hearing has been delayed at the Senate to Jan. 17. According to The Washington Post, Democrats are reportedly still waiting for the results of an ethics review on the nominee.

Some believe, however, that the decision to delay has been influenced by partisan politics as many Democrats fear that DeVos has little sympathy for public education and will push for vouchers. The report also cited that petitions signed by thousands have been submitted to the confirmation committee urging that DeVos should not be given the post.
