The Challenges Of Public Education In The 21st Century: Leveraging Technology, Improving Teaching Skills And Student Competence

The world has changed dramatically in the last 25 years due to globalization and the popularity and accessibility of the internet, and yet the public education system has remained the same. The so-called reform in education has only added to the bureaucracy level of public schools, without actually transforming public education.

Unlike society with its unprecedented changes, the education system seems to have been left behind. The public school system's structure and practices are remnants of what was appropriate during the industrial revolution. Unfortunately, the system of education in the country has failed to keep pace with the changes in society.

The 21st-century world is driven by information, but public schools have yet to implement the transformation process intended by the legislators to respond to the challenge, according to Commonwealth Magazine. Aside from the K-12 education challenges, there are also problems with the way the teachers are being trained. Technology may be the trend today and yet only a few are available for public school teachers.

The economic drivers have shifted to services but the instruction models being used by the education sector are still the ones used in the past 60 years, as per 21st Century Skills. To keep up with the needs of learners in the 21st Century, the educational institutions should keep them more interested and stimulated through the use of multimedia and technology. Schools should prepare students to cope and compete in the global economy.

Teachers should be equipped with teaching skills that will help them adapt to the educational needs of the 21st century, according to Education Today. This way, they will be able to teach their students the skills needed to survive the challenges of the modern society. It will also address the widening gap between the quality of students being produced by the educational system and the actual skills required by employers today.
