Best US Public High Schools 2017: Virginia, New York Top List; What Schools Are In Top 10?

A new list of the best U.S. public high schools for 2017 has been released. Among 24,000 institutions across America, Virginia and New York topped the rankings. Get to know the best 10 public high schools below.

The Best Schools gathered the data and analyzed the ranking through assessments of curriculums, students' tests results, graduation rate, student-teacher ratio and extracurricular opportunities. The list, however, excluded some public schools in the ranking, particularly those with very small population or those that didn't have a "high school atmosphere."

Virginia's Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria emerged as the number one public high school in the ranking followed by New York's Staten Island Technical High School (2) and South Carolina's Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston (3). The rest of the top 10 high schools include Walter Payton College Preparatory High School - Chicago, Illinois (4), School for the Talented and Gifted - Dallas, Texas (5), Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology - Lawrenceville, Georgia (6), Stuyvesant High School - New York, New York (7), Northside College Preparatory High School - Chicago, Illinois (8), School of Science and Engineering - Dallas, Texas (9) and Brooklyn Technical High School - Brooklyn, New York (10).

Chron reported Texas was one of the strongest states as it had five schools in the top 25. Aside from those already mentioned in the top 10, the rest of the top schools were Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School - Austin (22), Eastwood Academy - Houston (23) and Carnegie Vanguard High School - Houston (25).

NBC Columbus reported Ohio had two schools in the top 100 -- Wyoming High School (48) and Bexley High School (62). "We are proud to achieve high rankings using a variety of measures, with several highlighting our success in educating all students," Bexley's principal Dr. Harley Williams said.
