'The Americans' Star Matthew Rhys Talks Parenting, Raising Bilingual Baby With Keri Russell

"The Americans" star Matthew Rhys recently opened up about being a first-time parent with girlfriend and co-star Keri Russell. The Welsh actor said he's trying to raise his 9-month-old son as bilingual and he's also the more jittery parent than his partner.

In an interview on "Live! With Kelly," Rhys revealed he's talking "purely Welsh" to his baby boy, Sam. The actor said his son responds to him as if he is already speaking and described his native language as a bit "guttural" for a child.

Rhys also admitted he's the more jittery parent than Russell, who has two children from a previous marriage, River, 9, and Willa, 5. When Sam had what looked like a cold, the worried father wanted to bring him to the doctor but his mother wasn't bothered by it.

"She went, 'You take him to the doctor and when the doctor tells you he has a light cold, text me,'" Rhys told Kelly Ripa on her show, according to People. True enough, Sam was fine as his mother had assumed.

Rhys and Russell started dating in 2014 while doing a couple of seasons of "The Americans" on FX. In this series, they also play parents of teenagers who eventually learn their mother and father are Russian spies.

Russell said there are perks to working with a reel and real life partner as they practice their scenes and lines together even at home. "That's the wonderful thing [about] living with an actor," the actress said, as per Us Weekly.

Russell hardly speaks about her private life, however. The public wasn't aware Russell's marriage to Shane Deary had already ended in 2013 when Russell and Rhys started dating. Russell was married to her ex-husband for seven years.

"I tend to be very private and closed down about all sorts of things," Russell said, according to Daily Herald. "He's much more gregarious and in the world and talking to every single person," she added. She believes Rhys to be the funniest man she has ever met.
