Teen died after nurse mom treated her with hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19

A 17-year-old Florida teen contracted coronavirus after attending a party. She died after her mom, who is a nurse, treated her with hydroxychloroquine at home.

A coroner reported that on June 13, Carsyn Davis, of Fort Myers, fell ill with a headache, mild cough, and sinus pressure. According to Newsweek, three days prior, she attended Fort Myers' First Assembly of God, a large party at her church. People already deleted posts on social media about the party. Screenshots described the event as a "release party." People advertised basketball, games, karaoke, and DJ.

Below normal oxygen saturation

During the event, people did not practice social distancing and did not wear face masks. Initially, Davis' family thought that her illness was due to a sinus infection. They noticed that she had a grey appearance while sleeping six days after the symptoms appeared. As a nurse, her mother tested her oxygen levels. She found that her daughter only had 40 something. A normal person would have around 95 to 100.

Davis' mother borrowed an oxygen tank from the family's grandfather, who lived with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She also gave her daughter a dose of hydroxychloroquine

Hydroxychloroquine could cause heart rhythm issues

The FDA has warned people with the use of the drug for treating COVID-19, especially outside of hospital settings. According to the organization, it could cause heart rhythm issues. Clinical trials are still ongoing for the usage of the drug against the coronavirus. One should consider the side effects of the drug before use.

FDA wrote their advice about the drug in a statement. They encourage health care staff to closely screen and monitor patients before making such kinds of decisions.

Davis' parents took her to the hospital when her condition did not improve. The staff placed her in a pediatric intensive unit, but her parents refused to put her on a respirator. The teen's condition worsened so much on June 22, so they put her on a respirator, but it did not help. On June 23, she died COVID-19 complications and pneumonia.

According to a GoFundMe page, Davis survived cancer when she was a child. It also wrote that she had lived with a rare autoimmune disease. The teen served as an aide for kids with disabilities and was a Special Olympics and Be a Buddy program volunteer. She also loved to sing in a choir and to bowl.

The Rolling Stone reported that Davis posted on "Don't Mask Our Kids" website her anti-mask sentiments. Her mother, Carole Brunton Davis, has already taken her Facebook page down. Twitter screenshots were circulating that she was at odds with the doctors when her daughter was in the hospital. Brunton Davis was not happy because doctors did not want to treat her daughter with hydroxychloroquine.
