Should Parents Be Alarmed? Here Are the Coronavirus Symptoms in Children [Experts Reveal]

Health experts have repeatedly reminded the public that children are not vulnerable to the coronavirus.

Just as adults are prone to coronavirus, children can be infected as well. 

According to a pediatric infection and immunity professor from the University of Oxford, Andrew Pollard, children get the disease, however, they experience milder symptoms.

Nonetheless, parents should be vigilant in checking for symptoms of the coronavirus on children.

Here is a list of symptoms that should alarm parents:

1. Cough

According to WebMD, around 60% of those infected with coronavirus exhibited dry cough. However, some patients experienced a cough with mucus.

2. Congestion

runny nose or an itchy eye does not necessarily mean that a child is already infected with the coronavirus. Yet, if there are other symptoms present, then looking closely at your child's condition will be better.

3. Fever

Fever is one of the most common symptoms of coronavirus infection.

Parents should monitor their child's temperature, primarily if they are exhibiting other symptoms.

4. Loss of sense of smell

Some of those who are COVID-19 positive experience loss of sense of smell. In earlier studies, at least 30 to 98 per cent of the coronavirus patients experienced a loss of their sense of smell.

5. Difficulty in breathing

To check whether there is difficulty in breathing parents may ask their children they feel any tightness in the chest.

Also, parents make monitor if their child is catching their breath or if the child cannot breathe deeply.

6. Lack of energy

If parents notice that their child is not acting the way they do on regular days, then this should start to alarm them. According to a pediatrician from New York, Dr Daniel Cohen, parents should keep an eye on kids who are always exhausted.  

8. The problem of keeping a child awake

Dr. Cohen says it is essential to call a doctor if you can't ask a child to get up, especially if they fall asleep all the time.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Protection (CDC), symptoms appear within two to fourteen days after exposure to the coronavirus.

Aside from these symptoms, parents should also watch out for more severe symptoms of the coronavirus. CDC tags these symptoms as emergency warning signs. That means that if these symptoms are observed, the child should be brought to a medical facility, immediately. Here are those:

  • Confusion
  • Bluish face or lips
  • Cannot wake up
  • Feels pressure in the chest
  • Stressed breathing

CDC suggests that if these symptoms are observed, call 911 or the nearby local emergency facility.
