Lonely 75-Year-Old Widower Puts up Poster to Find Friends, Thousands Responded

A lonely 75-year-old widower puts up a poster asking for friends after his wife had died in May. Now, thousands of people all over the world have responded wanting to be his pal.

Email inbox has crashed

Due to so much email he has received, Tony Williams' inbox has crashed. He has received hundreds of phone calls from people across the globe. People from America, Holland, Germany, Egypt, Australia, India, and Japan are inviting him to travel.

They are asking to have road trips with him to the US or to drink gin and tonics over an afternoon. The pensioner from Alton in England's East Hampshire also receives phone calls, lunches, and other kids wanting to adopt him as their grandfather.

Receives delightful emails

The retired 75-year-old physicist said that the love and compassion he has been receiving from people has made him teary-eyed. He explained that people have been sending him delightful emails.

He said that he has been receiving kids' and pets' pictures. Others are saying that they are thinking of him, while others have been sharing their aspirations with him. He said that a local teacher sent him an email asking if her students could write him letters.

Immediately, he sent his reply and said that he would be delighted to receive such kinds of letters. Williams also said that he receives phone calls from people in Canada and the States. One lady told him that if he went to Florida, she would show him around the area.

Flooded with messages

Williams said that since he started replying to the emails, it has become flooded so fast. In estimation, he receives about four or five messages every minute. Now, he has a hard time replying to the people because his email account seemed like it has crashed.

He said that he received a red message saying that there is an error so he needs to reset it to make it work again.

After his wife died, he was "cursed" by loneliness

Williams and his late wife, Jo, moved to Alton so they could be closer to his wife's sister, Beryl, last year. In May, after his 75-year-old wife died nine days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he had no one to talk to.

Since they did not have children, the lonely widower often sat at home waiting for someone to call him. It never does, so he thought that maybe he was "cursed" by loneliness. He made business cards and handed them out when he took a walk or went to the supermarket.

But since he did not receive any reply, he decided to put up a poster in his window to look for friends. After patiently waiting for his phone to ring throughout the summer, now he has received thousands of responses.

He has friends all over the world, and he plans to meet up with some once COVID restrictions allow him to do so. He is both overwhelmed and thankful for it all.
