Fecal Transplants: Scientist Says Poop May Reveal the Answer to Your Ailments

Fecal transplants or the procedure of transferring the poop of a donor to another may be the best way to promote healing in the body. A gut scientist, who had his bouts with infection, said that by having a deeper understanding of the gut, which can be analyzed through the feces, one may be able to live a healthier and better life.

Rob Knight, a well-known gut bacteria scientist in the United States, said that by changing the gut environment, which consists of tons of bacteria, the body can benefit from it,  depending on how positive the change was. Huffington Post mentioned that activities humans do like sleeping, eating, working, confronting stress, all create changes in the gut, which eventually have an overall effect on health.

Standing six-foot-three inches and previously weighing around 260 pounds, Knight discovered how changes in the gut bacteria impacted his health. He and his wife contracted an infection, and took the same medications, yet he was the only one who experienced rapid weight loss, leading to a 60-pound reduction in weight. From then on, he started to observe and analyze his poop on a daily basis.

According to Knight, "It's amazing to think that material we flush down the toilet every day could have such profound implications for how we can live our lives."

Knight said that the non-human cells that people have in their bodies, the microbiome, can one day lead people to more profound and specific treatments. He was thinking of reaching a point where by merely looking at the microbiome, medical practitioners can tailor medications and procedures, that will truly benefit the patient. One example given by Knight was for someone to know the kind of diet and exercise that will be perfect for the health goals of individuals through peering into the microbiome.

Although this is very promising, some individuals may not find it easy to change their gut bacteria by fecal transplants. Insiders Health mentioned that this is done through an enema and it could be very beneficial for the body. It also added that seeking a healthier lifestyle can contribute to better gut bacteria environment.

So if you are experiencing a lot of health problems, your gut bacteria may hold the key to your health. In the event you're not able to improve your microbiome, then a fecal transplant may be your alternative.
