A Year-Old Toddler Triumphs Over Blood Cancer, Receives Little Star Award for her Battle

If one has courage and the will to fight back nothing seems impossible. A year-old toddler, Grace Elvidge, who was diagnosed with leukemia at just 11 weeks, has finally triumphed over the life-threatening disease and recently received the Little Star Award from the Cancer Research Association,U.K.

Elvidge was detected with severe leukemia with an immensely high white blood cell count when she was only 11-weeks old. Elvidge was born in July, 2012 and a few weeks later she was down with a cold. Her mother, Alexandra Elvidge, 34, took her to a general physician who suspected it to be a viral infection. But the condition of the new born was deteriorating and finally Elvidge was admitted to the Wythenshawe Hospital.

After a series of tests, Elvidge's parents received the news that she was suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Elvidge was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

"We were so concerned about how ill she was then that the leukemia diagnosis almost seemed secondary to our worries," said Alexandra, reports Daily Mail.

Nearly after two weeks, little Elvidge was taken out of the ICU and put on intensive chemotherapy for the next four months followed by further treatments.

"We are so proud of Grace," said Alexandra in a statement. Although she's only small she's been extremely brave and tolerant of all the pain, sickness, prodding and probing. She is amazing."

Finally, in October, Elvidge's cancer went into remission.

She was recently presented with the Little Star award by the Cancer Association as a token of appreciation of the hardships she battled in her first few months. The award is given to all under-18s diagnosed with cancer or who have been treated for cancer in the last five years.

"Grace has been through such a lot at a very young age and is more than deserving of a Little Star award," said Jane Bullock, spokesperson of the Cancer Research Association.

Grace is not the only child receiving the Little Star award this year. A five-year old Millie Cain from Liverpool also received the award for beating cancer at such a small age.
