'Game of Thrones' Spinoff News & Update: HBO Says No, George RR Martin Says Yes And Here's His Idea

Will HBO have a "Game of Thrones" spinoff? There has been buzz following reports that the show is ending soon. However, the cable network expressed it has no plans for now, but creator George RR Martin is willing and has offered some ideas.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, George RR Martin implied that a "Game of Thrones" spinoff has plenty of story possibilities. There is no problem with materials because his imaginary Westeros world has "eight million stories."

If ever HBO would be interested to make one, George RR Martin offered his ideas from "Dunk & Egg," the supposed "Game of Thrones" prequel.

"Each of the novellas could easily be done as a two-hour stand-alone movie for television," George RR Martin said. "That would probably be the ideal way to do them, rather than as an ongoing weekly series," he added.

Earlier, the executive producers of "Game of Thrones," David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, said that they are looking to do the series until Season 8 only and with 10 remaining episodes in total. "It's crossing out of a television schedule into more of a mid-range movie schedule," said Weiss, per Variety.

The sixth season is starting on Sunday, April 24. HBO's programming head, Michael Lombardo, revealed that he and the producers have already discussed ending "Game of Thrones" in two years.

He also confirmed that no prequels or spinoffs are on the table. "If that were to happen it would have to come from [Benioff and Weiss] really feeling something, or [author George R.R.] Martin really feeling that it was the right thing to do," he said in another interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Part of the reason for holding off any "Game of Thrones" spinoff discussion is because it's an "all-consuming" project. The focus for HBO, the showrunners and Martin is to complete the current show for now.
