Colorado mom fakes son's cancer for donations

A Colorado mom is facing charges for allegedly lying about her son having cancer and collecting donations for it, according to reports.

Sandy Nguyen, 28, reportedly made her 6-year-old son, as well as her entire family, believe the child was suffering from cancer.

Investigators involved in her case conducted a search March 7 in her home, where they found $23,000 in cash. At the time of the search, Nguyen said her son didn't really suffer from cancer.

According to reports, Nguyen's family received $25,000 in donations from friends and family.

Nguyen's neighbor, Tim Sullivan, who used to visit the family's home, claimed that he recently saw the little boy with a shaved head.

"My reaction is, 'I can't believe it!'" he told Fox28.

The little boy's classmates and parents at Rolling Hills Elementary School all chipped in, paying extra to wear a hat to school and teachers paying to wear jeans. Funds were also raised through a 5 kilometer race for the boy.

According to investigators, Nguyen used some of the money to fund a recent trip to Disneyland, a photo of the family enjoying their vacation posted on her Facebook page.

Arapahoe County Sheriff's Captain, Larry Etheridge, told ABC7 they believe Nguyen is the only person in her family who is aware of the scam.

"We don't have any reason to believe that anyone other than herself knew the truth. The little boy believed he had cancer. The rest of the family believed he had cancer."

Nguyen previously claimed that her son suffered from stage three Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.
