Film Version of ‘Wicked’ The Musical, Production of the Movie Confirmed?

Los Angeles - The said schedule for the screen version of the Broadway Musical, 'Wicked' has finally been set. It will be directed by Stephen Daldry and will be released via Universal Pictures.

The date for the release has been set as well. Fans should be able to see the premier on December 20, 2019.  New York Times reported that director Daldry has been flirting with the project since 2012.

There are no casts mentioned yet, and no audition calls has been set for the parts of the characters but this is an exciting time since there is already a date set. The wait will be a little over two years from now at least.

'Wicked' is a prequel to the Wizard Of Oz, a popular classical musical movie that stared, Judy Garland, as Dorothy. It is a story of a girl from Kansas, Dorothy who was taken to the land of Oz where she met a talking Tin Man, Lion, Scare Crow, and  of course the Good and the Bad Witch.

In 'Wicked', however the story focuses more on the viewpoint of the witches, named Elphaba and Galinda. The musical has some very catchy songs, one of which is the show stopper "Defying Gravity."  Broadway casted Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda. It has received rave reviews since.

As for the movie, writer Winnie Holzman and Lyricist-composer Stephen Swartz are the one collaborating on a script for the film. The Wicked movie will be produced by Marc Platt. Platt and Universal Stage are also the same producers for the long running musical, which premiered in San Francisco in 2003.

Gregory Mcguire is the original novelist for the book Wicked, when it turned into a Broadway Musical, it has become a hit in the US with tours all over the country and abroad, that Includes UK, and the Philippines.

While there is over two years to wait for the Wicked movie, take a look at the show stopper Defying Gravity in the meantime. This was a performance during the Tony Awards. Hope this is enough to get us all excited.
