Medical Marijuana Legalization Causes Sales Decline Among Pain Killers and Anti Depressants

Medical marijuana legalization on some states in the US made a drastic impact and affected the sales of prescription drugs. Medical marijuana caused a decline on prescription medication especially for depression and pain.

Medical News Daily released a report stating that the decline on prescription drugs was greatly influenced by medical marijuana legalization. 25 and Washington DC have already approved the usage medical marijuana when it comes to addressing health issues including depression, chronic pain and even cancer treatments.

Though most states have already approved medical marijuana and even recreational use, there are still states which classified marijuana as "Schedule 1" drug. It was mentioned that this states didn't approve medical marijuana consumption due to lack of evidence and the heightened potential abuse.

In the July issue of Health Affairs, it was mentioned that medical marijuana laws created a significant impact which affects the decline of prescription medications on various states. Aol also added that Medicare prescription dropped after medical marijuana was legalized.

"There is scientific evidence that cannabinoids possess pain ­relieving properties, and some clinical evidence to support their medical use for patients suffering from painful conditions," as mentioned on Harborside Health Center. "Cannabis helps cancer and HIV patients and others who suffer from the most severe cases of chronic pain. While some people can't walk without experiencing severe pain, others are unable to eat regularly due to a decreased appetite from other prescribed medications."

Marijuana in general is packed with health benefits especially with the presence of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), known as the active ingredient in marijuana. It is often used for pain relief, depression treatment, PTSD, asthma and it can even be used as an appetite stimulant as per Leaf Science.

Though there are some that are fighting for medical marijuana legalization, there are those who oppose to it stating that it lacks adequate research in terms of providing medicinal relief.
