Obesity News And Updates: Obese Men Are More Likely To Die Before They Reach 70 Compared To Obese Women

We already know obesity is deadly but a new study offers additional information. Obese men are at more risk to die than obese women.

According to WebMD, a new research published in The Lancet suggests that obesity is almost three times deadlier for men than women. The research team analyzed information from 189 studies in Europe, North America and other continents which included data of 3.9 million people from ages 20 to 90 years old.

Among the 3.9 million people, 30 percent of obese men are more likely to die before reaching 70 years old while obese women fall at a 15 percent risk. If obese men and women lose even just 10 percent of their weight, a 10 percent risk to die before 70 would be removed for women and 20 percent for men (via WebMD).

The reason behind the greater risk for death of obese men than obese women is unknown. The study assumes it is because obese men have greater insulin resistance, liver fat levels and diabetes risk than obese women. These are according to previous observations of obesity in people (via WebMD).

Nonetheless, the goal of the study is to emphasize that obesity leads to increased risk of developing major chronic diseases which may cause premature death. It also says that the more obese the person is, the more serious the danger of death is.

The State of Obesity reports that in 2015, 13.0 percent of U.S. high school students were found to be obese and 16 percent were overweight. In September 2015, there is a 35 percent rate of obesity among U.S. adults in Arkansas, West Virginia and Mississippi. Rates of obesity among adults are above 20 percent in all states.

As per National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHBLI), practicing a healthy lifestyle helps prevent becoming overweight and obese. Eating a healthy diet and being physically active should start as early as childhood that parents are responsible for. NHBLI recommends that the healthy lifestyle should be one of the primary goals of the family to avoid and cure obesity.
