MTV Video Music Awards 2016 Nominations: Taylor Swift Snubbed? Beyonce vs Adele Domination

The MTV Video Music Awards 2016 nominations have just been announced and as expected, Beyonce and Adele dominate, getting 11 and 7 nominations respectively. The "Send My Love To Your New Lover" singer will be facing off with the "If I Were A Boy" diva in the top award - Video of the Year - for their "Hello" and "Formation" clips, along with Justin Bieber, Drake and Kanye West.

Despite "Hello" getting the most nominations for any video, Beyonce's domination in the nominee's list is clear with a career-high nomination, two nominations higher than her nods in 2009 when she won the Video of the Year Moonman for "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)." She will also face herself in one category, Best Choreography, Billboard reported.  She already has 16 trophies under her belt, just four awards less than record holder Madonna.

One glaring omission in the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 nominations is Taylor Swift. Swift, who won last year for Video of the Year for "Bad Blood," released the clips for "Wildest Dreams" and "Out of the Woods" within the eligibility period. Could this be because of the backlash Swift is getting after the whole Calvin Harris - Kim Kardashian controversy this past month? We could not really tell.

What makes the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 nominations different from that of previous ceremonies is it now has a new category: Breakthrough Long Form Music Video, the Albany Democrat Herald reported. This could be in response to the overwhelmingly positive response after the release of "Lemonade," which was aired on HBO and earned Beyonce an Emmy nomination for directing a variety special.

The announcement of the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 nominations starts a month-long market blitz for the awards ceremony which will be held in the Madison Square Garden in New York City. It will air live on MTV at 9 pm ET.
