Ex-‘NCIS’ Star Michael Weatherly Talks 'Bull' Series Premiere, Return To CBS With New Drama Inspired By Dr. Phil

"NCIS" viewers were bummed when Michael Weatherly announced that he's leaving his top-rating CBS show. However, the actor is not actually dropping off the TV grid as he's getting back on television and in the same network this season. Michael Weatherly's new drama, "Bull," is debuting on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 9 p.m. So, what will viewers need to know and expect from this show?

"Bull" starring Michael Weatherly centers on Dr. Jason Bull, who is an expert on human behavior and mostly works court cases. "He can pick up exactly the emotional needs of the client, and everyone on the jury, and the judge, and the prosecution," said Mark Goffman, "Bull's" executive producer, per Yahoo.

The character requires a versatile actor for the role. He was inspired by famous psychologist on television, Dr. Phil McGraw, who is also one of "Bull's" producer, per Deadline. According to Dr. Phil, he thinks Michael Weatherly was the perfect pick to play the part. "There was nobody else who could do it," he said in the Deadline report.

On his TV return, Michael Weatherly said that getting cast as the lead on "Bull" was unexpected. After leaving "NCIS" and giving up 13 years of playing Agent Tony DiNozzo, he was bent on doing changes to his work.

"I didn't think it was going to be another full-order network hour drama," said Weatherly, per TV Guide. Yet he didn't turn the role down because the choice was a "no-brainer," per an advice from Robert Wagner, a friend and former "NCIS" co-star.

TV Line reports that "Bull" is expected to rake in the ratings coming from fans who are anticipating Michael Weatherly's return to television. The show is a typical procedural with an ensemble of characters that will be helping out Dr. Jason Bull in the cases. Its presentation is right up the alley for CBS' audience, so Michael Weatherly is in familiar territory. Watch the actor talk about "Bull" below.
