Vitamin supplements are said to be helpful in boosting the body's function. According to numerous studies, vitamins and supplements can actually do more harm than good as it is not needed by the body. Though some vitamins are not needed, there are those that are actually essential.

It is a common misconception that vitamins are ideal for boosting the body's function. Though it may seem logical, there are certain vitamins that are not needed by the body, and once taken in excess can potentially do more harm than good.

Fox News Health revealed that taking vitamin supplements in excess can lead to kidney and liver failure, and even cancer. Dr. Aoi Sedrat answered some of the crucial questions in regards to the effects of multivitamin supplements and herbal remedies. When Dr. Sedrat was asked if there's a possibility of GI tract obstruction from taking multivitamins, he mentioned that it is possible if a person already has a pre-existing condition prior to taking the supplements.

"If there is acid reflux, it can get aggravated by some vitamins and natural remedies," Sedarat said. "If that continues to be a problem, it can cause a narrowing of the esophagus. Taking a large bolus of anything, especially pills, it can get obstructed there."

It is important to ask a health care professional before taking any supplements with a pre-existing condition. As per Business Insider, however, there are certain vitamins that are needed by the body to boost its function including Vitamin D, Zinc, and Folic Acid.

It was revealed that the body needs Vitamin D supplements as it is not commonly found in one's daily diet. Vitamin D is ideal for bones as it helps it absorb the calcium. Vitamin D would work well if the individual would bask under the sunlight.

Zinc is needed by the body as it helps fight off the bugs that can bring common cold. Folic Acid, on the other hand, is greatly needed by women who are pregnant or to those who are trying to get pregnant.
