‘Doctor Who’ Season 10 Spoilers & Plot Details: Everything Confirmed So Far! Showrunner Addresses Peter Capaldi’s Rumored Departure

When "Doctor Who" Season 10 premieres in April 2017, a new companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie), will be stepping inside the TARDIS to join The Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) journeys. As its tradition every year, a Christmas special titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" will air this year before the long-running series' tenth season.

"Doctor Who" Season 10 may still be a couple of months away but plot details have already been confirmed in recent weeks. Many fans already know that "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat is leaving his post as head writer and executive producer after Season 10 and is passing the baton to "Broadchurch" creator Chris Chibnall, according to Digital Spy.

Chibnall's debut as the new "Doctor Who" showrunner of Season 11 is expected to occur in 2018. Moffat, meanwhile, plans to go out with a bang and promised that his last run is "a really good season" of "Doctor Who," adding that "some sort of grand goodbye" won't happen, IGN reported. He also said that he plans Season 10 to end "like episode 1 of a new series" and "like it's all just beginning," Entertainment Weekly reported (via Doctor Who Magazine).

Moffat's impending departure from "Doctor Who" sparked rumors that Capaldi is leaving the titular role as well, which was what happened when Moffat's predecessor, Russell T. Davies, left the series in 2010 alongside the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. In August 2016, Moffat addressed these rumors and placated the Twelfth Doctor fans' worries.

Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine that he is not "writing out a Doctor." He added that Capaldi "is loving the role, and long may he do so." Check out the actor in a behind-the-scenes snapshot from Season 10 below.

Moffat said in 2015 that "Doctor Who" Season 10 will have 12 episodes (13 if you add the 2016 Christmas special). His last "Doctor Who" episode, on the other hand, will be the 2017 Christmas special, Digital Spy further reported.

"Doctor Who" Season 10 will highlight the Time Lord's "alienness," Parent Herald previously reported. Bill, on the other hand, was described as smart with a quick wit that "can get her into a bit of trouble."

Though he isn't an official companion, Matt Lucas' Nardole will appear on "Doctor Who" Season 10 regularly. Nardole debuted in last year's Christmas special.

Michelle Gomez's Missy is returning as well, while two "brilliant, prominent and amazing writers" have signed on to "Doctor Who" Season 10. Other guest stars are Stephanie Hyam and David Suchet.
