Marijuana Can Weaken Heart Muscles, New Study Suggests

Marijuana has always been a controversial topic whether it is for the health advocate or only an enthusiast. Since it has been legalized in some states now in America, facts about it and its harm have been rising. One of them is a study made by scientists at the St. Luke's University Hospital Network stating that it could weaken the muscle's heart.

In an article published by CNN, this finding was even showed during the yearly conference headed by the American Heart Association located in New Orleans. The lead researcher, Dr. Amitoj Singh, said that they found marijuana's effect could cause stress cardiomyopathy. It is when a muscle weakens, and it is often experienced during times of grief like when a loved one dies. But apart from those sad and traumatic moments in a life of a person, apparently smoking marijuana could also trigger it.

According to The Independent, smoking weed won't necessarily cause permanent damage to the heart, but rather it could only temporarily weaken it. Stress cardiomyopathy sounds a lot scarier than what it is because it mimics symptoms of myocardial infarction. It is experienced when the heart seems to stop pumping blood to the body. Doctors say it is only temporary, but there is a possibility that it could lead into some serious trouble if not managed ahead of time.

They also stated that weed smokers are more likely to experience this than people who are not smoking marijuana. These means that people exposed to marijuana are also more prone to having a heart attack and are more likely to have their heart experience some unusual rhythms.

Do you think that any of these findings are real or is it just a way to discourage people from smoking or using weed? Share what's on your mind regarding this topic in the box below.
