‘The Crown’ Used 20,000 Costumes In Season 1; What's In Store For Season 2?

The Netflix original series “The Crown” is said to be its most expensive show yet, with a $100 million budget. With its accurate production design and elaborate costumes, it's safe to say that most of its budget is allocated to the show's aesthetics.

Emmy-winning costume designer Michele Clapton heads the wardrobe department of "The Crown." Clapton is also responsible for another award-winning hit series, HBO's "Game of Thrones."

For "The Crown," Clapton pays attention to every detail of the characters' costumes, especially the clothes of the young Queen Elizabeth II, played by actress Claire Foy. Clapton considers the project as "daunting." This could be true as the costume department, made up of almost 100 people, had to dress 7,000 extras and the other 293 characters.

An estimated 20,000 costumes were used during the entire ten episodes of “The Crown” Season 1. Some of these were handmade by Clapton and her team. Clapton had to watch and immerse herself in old films and footages of Queen Elizabeth II to get a good grasp of the designs and patterns of the 1940s, Clapton said in an interview with Daily Mail.

Given the amount of dedication the production team puts into the show, fans can only expect a bigger season 2. The new season is said to be already in the works. In fact, executive producer Andrew Eaton hopes that "The Crown" will run for at least six seasons, according to Digital Spy.

However, there is still no concrete plot or synopsis of the new season. Nonetheless, there are a lot of speculations that the second season of “The Crown” will focus on the political endeavors of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip (Matt Smith).

“The Crown” Season 2 is set to air on Nov. 2017.
