Stuttering May Be Linked To Changing Patterns Of Speech, Language and Neural Circuits

Stuttering is a neuropsychiatric condition. The research was conducted to find out the causes of stuttering in adults and children. The causes trace towards changes in speech and language based brain circuits according to the research carried out. This research is unique of its kind as it has been done for the very first time.

Even though these perspectives offer a view on stutterings connection to the brain, there's always another side of the story as well. Dr. Mort Cooper, who has been an expert in the field for quite some time, suggests that stuttering is a habit when the stutterer develops a certain fear of vocalizing particular sounds. This fear becomes engraved in their brain and it becomes a habit for the person to stutter because of that intrinsic fear.

The latest study has employed proton magnetic resonance imaging to look at brain regions in both adults and children who are found to stammer and stutter in communicating their thoughts, Medical News says. The findings by MRI conducted by experts have found out that certain metabolites alteration across the brain is responsible and in a way linked to the stuttering of speech.

Further, e-magazine Science Daily also said that the metabolite changes modify the working of brain circuits that control speech production, emotions, and support attention are eventually causing the individual to stammer while communicating the thoughts.

The parts of the brain causing this stuttering are known partly. Most of the regions are unknown, so an experiment was conducted, and the subjects of the study were forty-seven children and forty-seven adults.
Some of them had stammering issues others were normal among the individuals who were under observation. The technique employed was proton shift imaging of the brain.

The results were according to the hypotheses made by the experts. The affected regions of the brain according to this experiment were Bohland speech production and Emotions control networks.
Complete regions were not affected, but some of the nodes were found to be affected which resulted in stammer of speech. Hence it was proved that stuttering is linked to speech brain circuit alterations and changes.
