Boys Are Better Than Girls In Physics And Maths: TIMSS Results Demonstrate

There are several subjects taught in school these days, but basic subjects are essential for school level education. Mathematics is one of the most important subjects, which can be a real struggle for some.

To assess the students' ability of the students worldwide, 60 countries including the US, took part in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) And TIMSS Advanced for assessing students potential in advanced maths and physics. Education World published the results of the TIMSS Advanced.

Singapore, Russia, Japan and China's education system triumphed and turned out to be the ultimate winners in this study. Singapore students were considered specifically exceptional. On the national levels, a gender-based comparison was also conducted. Boys were dominant in higher grades, females were behind by 16 points. Interestingly, the difference in the performance of  boys and girls in lower grades were not that big.

Experts have found that male students not only perform well in math but the time they'd reach high-school, but also in their higher studies of Math and physics. According to a study published in Science Mag, female students are behind in mathematics due to low levels of confidence. It suggests that females lack the confidence in their mathematical abilities, irresponsive of their capabilities.

Research revealed that female students leave the STEM because they think that they won't be able to understand calculus, thus their confidence level go down and they stop pursuing their courses and change their mediums.

Jessica Ellis, an assistant professor of Mathematics at Colorado state university mentioned that it's normal for new students to change their courses in college while realizing that they would not succeed in their field, but this phenomenon occurring at different rates in different areas is rather difficult to understand. A psychological analysis can help.
