New Study Shows How Teens Could Fight Depression

Teenagers these days are for some reason prone to depression and anxiety. A new study reveals that psychological counseling in the form of 3 therapies could be effective enough to help teens who are battling with such mental illness overcome it.

In an article reported by CBS, depression in adults usually starts in their teenage years. A lot of those who are suffering from it in their old age weren't treated earlier because the diagnosis wasn't also made until they are older. In this age of information and technology, the good news is that it is faster and easier to determine if a teenager is undergoing depression or has a tendency to struggle with it.

This study has a proof saying that using psychological treatments are effective that about 70 percent of young people battling with depression were able to overcome it. They have observed its efficacy on a short term basis but they still haven't confirmed if this could work long term. This research used 465 teenagers in England who are struggling with anxiety and depression.

Each of the teens was brought to one of the three psychological treatments namely for cognitive behavior, short-term psychoanalytic and a brief psychosocial intervention. It is through this that they found out that 70 percent of these youths are responding well to treatments. About half of these young people have their symptoms of depression slow down in less than a year.

Experts are even more curious about its effect in the coming years and with continued treatment. This is going to be a need now since The Chicago Tribune just reported that depression in teenagers is rising in America. The journal of Pediatrics exposed the number percentage of teens affected by this phenomena and it increased at about 11.3 percent just this November.

If you have a teenager suffering from depression, make sure to consult a doctor to treat it earlier. Share this information to your loved ones today.
