'The Duelist' Had Mixed Reviews As It Premiered; Too Much Gore Made Some Critics Turn Away!

The movie "The Duelist" or "Duelyant" (Russian) did have mixed reviews as it had its limited release back on Dec. 2, 2016. Movie critics and moviegoers alike who watched the movie have several things to say whether or not it favors the movie.

The movie "The Duelist" is a period film which showcases how it was back then in Russia. From the title itself, dueling is a common practice in Russia during the 19th century. It is a regulated practice which is used to settle disputes and disagreements.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie revolves around a professional duelist in 19th century Russia who happens to having second thoughts about his profession. This confusion was brought about with him meeting the sister of a future opponent. The movie is also a good representative of the Czarist Russia.

The movie, though interesting has registered rather low on the site's ranking. It only had 46 percent as its ranking. However, 74 percent of people did say they liked the movie.

Godfrey Cheshire of RogerEbert.com and a top critic said that the movie "The Duelist" is a welcome indication of current Russian cinema's ambitions and potential. Glenn Kenny of New York Times and top critic seems to disagree by saying that the clichéd story line pursues turgidity with a relentless determination.

Leslie Felperin of Hollywood Reporter and a top critic said that the movie is decidedly retro and spectacular to look at. Simon Abrams of Village Voice and top critic agrees saying that the eye for detail makes the movie's protagonist just as compelling as its setting.

As added by IMDb, the movie "The Duelist" stars Pyotr Fyodorov, Vladimir Mashkov, Yuliya Khlynina, and Yuri Kolokolnikov. They are also joined by Aleksandr Mizev, Sergey Nevidimov, Vladimir Panichev and many more.

Another review of the movie says that it is great but bloody. The movie proves to be not advisable for the squeamish and weak in constitution. There are a lot of gore and blood in the entirety of the movie, giving it an R for its rating.
