'Emerald City' Air Date, Cast News & Latest Updates: Is New NBC Series Darker Than ‘Game Of Thrones?’

"Emerald City" as a re-telling of the classic "The Wonder Wizard Of Oz" by NBC may contest HBO hit "Game Of Thrones" in thematic darkness. Starring Adria Arjona (Dorothy Gale), Vincent D'Onofrio (The Wizard) and Gerran Howell (Jack), the new series will be directed by Tarsem Singh of "The Cell" and "Mirror, Mirror." Recent trailer release teased that the adaptation by executive producer David Schulner is anything but the sweet fantasy that L. Frank Baum created.

As We Got This Covered reports, "Emerald City" was almost scrapped in the early stages of planning. However, NBC reversed its verdict decided to continue with the "Wizard Of Oz" adaptation. While recent trailer release revealed the earnest craftsmanship with which "Emerald City" is crafted, the media outlet warns that the new NBC series may not be to everyone's taste.

For starters, "Emerald City" touts a label of "dark" and "sexy" as Entertainment Weekly points out in an earlier report. According to Collider, the adaptation has plenty of terrors lurking within. /FILM supports this perspective and suggests that the new NBC series shares characteristics with "Game Of Thrones."

However, having had more years of practice in the deceit and cynicism of The Wizard Oz, could this re-imagining of a classic material, in fact, be the darker series compared to "Game Of Thrones?" Digital Trends reports that viewers will have 10 episodes by which to reach the conclusion in this comparison. The fact that "Emerald City" boasts strong casting, which also includes Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Lucas The Scarecrow) and Isabel Lucas (Anna), does not hurt.

IMDb posts that NBC will release "Emerald City" Episode 1 and 2 on Jan 6, 2017. Episode 3, "Mistress - New - Mistress" will air on Jan 13. Episode 4, on the other hand, "Science And Magic" will air on Jan 20.
