‘Why Him?’ Film Review: James Franco And Bryan Cranston Did A Brilliant Acting Job; Hilarious Plot Where Conventional Meets New Age

"Why Him?" is a comedy film featuring a fuddy-duddy dad Ned Fleming (played by Bryan Cranston) who will meet his daughter's obnoxious boyfriend Laird Mayhew (played by James Franco). How chaotic could it be, as the title suggests, "Why Him?"

The movie features how a conventional father deals with a new ager future-son-in-law. It will highlight how daddy Ned will accept his beloved daughter Stephanie's boyfriend Laird, who is described to be a naughty, zillionaire, genius inventor of a video game.

The first meeting does not seem appropriate as when Ned and his wife Barb (played by Megan Mullally) came to spend Christmas with Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) and Laird in the latter's wood-and-glass Palo Alto mansion. It turns out that when Stephanie's parents arrived, they were welcomed with a shirtless, party boy Laird, showing off his tattooed body. To complete Ned's nightmare, Laird was not careful to avoid dropping the F-word in his conversations.

Aside from the unpleasant appearance, the boyfriend came out too strong, acting like he has already been a part of Stephanie's family for the longest time. Laird also made several flirting with Barb, which looked like it was real and intentional.

The movie emphasizes how Laird annoys the very formal Ned. To make things more annoying, Laird's personality is being loved by everyone else, except his girlfriend's father. Although Laird is presented to be a walking cartoon, idiotic kind-of-guy, he also sports a major ego and things get crazier when Laird tells Ned that he is going to marry Stephanie.

The major conflict also stems out from the extreme lifestyle differences of Ned and Laird. Ned has a laid back lifestyle, doing a struggling printing business and not really acquainted with the latest technology. On the other hand, Laird lives a technology-advanced lifestyle.

"Why Him?" presents how Ned will be introduced to a different world of Laird. When Ned stays at the house of Laird, the former will be overwhelmed with his ignorance of the electronic world. Viewers will enjoy the scene where Ned will encounter for the first time an electronic Japanese toilet basin which comes with a built-in spritzer, Variety reported.

The publication commends James Franco for doing a brilliant job in portraying the role of the obnoxious boyfriend and Bryan Cranston for his excellent acting skills in playing such a challenging role too.

In another review, the first scene reveals how horny Stephanie's relationship with her cocky boyfriend is. The video chat between the lovers contains dirty talks of flirting and sex, the Hollywood Reporter detailed.

Meanwhile, the official trailer highlights how Ned feels for Stephanie when he says that as his little daughter begins to mature, "It seems that no guy would ever be good enough for her." Check out the video before you head out to the theaters on Dec. 23.
