Heroic Nurse Woke up with 3 Babies in Her Arms After Beirut Blast Knocked Her Unconscious

An unidentified nurse woke up from the Beirut blast and found herself carrying three babies. The photographer, Bilal Marie Jawich, told CNN how he reached the hospital. He said that he followed the smoke until he reached the port of Beirut. He explained that his "journalistic instinct" led him to the hospital where the nurse is.

He took the photo shortly after the blast had rocked the hospital. Twelve patients, two visitors, and four nurses died on the spot.

Had the babies after waking up from the blast

Jawich said dozens of bodies, wounded or died, surrounded the nurse. The nurse told the photographer that she was in the maternity ward when the blast happened. It left her unconscious. When she woke up, she found herself carrying three babies.

Jawich was amazed when he saw the nurse holding three newborn children. He noticed the nurse's calm demeanor was in contrast with the atmosphere of her surroundings.

Jawich explained that the nurse looked like she possessed a hidden force that helped her save the three children and also gave her self-control. He said that people stand out during the violent, dark, and evil circumstances, adding that the nurse did her task well.

Nothing like the Beirut blast

Jawich shared that throughout his career as a photographer, he has witnessed many wars, but what happened in Beirut was different. He said that there was nothing like the devastation that the area received.

Al Arabiya English heard from a doctor that the hospitals are now moving their patients to medical facilities that were not affected by the blast. Firass Abiad, hospital director, told Metro UK that they are bringing their patients to the emergency building. They are trying to send them to different hospitals from there because the urgent care is also full.

The photo of the nurse holding the newborns while taking phone calls amid the chaos shows how healthcare finds solutions during crisis times. The nurse is a great example of how a person could create winning moments during the darkest tragedies.

What caused the explosion

The devastating explosion that happened in Beirut, Lebanon, has caused a lot of casualties no one ever imagined. It has killed more than 100 people, injured more than 4,000, and left about 300,000 homeless.

Abbas Ibrahim, Lebanon's General Security Chief, said that highly explosive materials caused the blast in the city's port area. They believe that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate got ignited by a nearby warehouse fire.

Lebanese officials said that in 2013, they confiscated the stored ammonium nitrate from an Africa-bound ship. The massive blast was said to be about one-fifth of the size of the atomic blast that happened in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.
