Entitled Child: 7 Ways to Prevent Raising One

Parents always want what's best for their children. Sometimes, they tend to give everything that the kiddos want to make them happy. Little do they know that doing so could make their children feel entitled. 

Entitled children feel that they have to get everything to be happy. "Motherhood Maniac" stated that when your child reasons out that they have to get everything because they want it, that is one sign that you are raising an entitled child. 

"Moms.com" noted that children tend to be self-centered and might feel that the world revolves around them. When they feel entitled, they avoid being accountable for their mistakes, instead, they find someone else to blame. 

Here are ways you could do to avoid raising an entitled child. 

Limit access to pleasure

Your children may only be young once, but it does not mean that it had to be only fun and games. Give them responsibilities before they could enjoy the play. Make sure that they finish their homework first before they binge on that video game.

Teach them to work on their shortcomings

Every person has their strengths and weaknesses. However, it does not mean that when a child is not good at math, he should skip the subject. Teach your children to work on their weaknesses so that they could improve on them. 

Never cover up for your children's mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes, and so does your child. Let them grow and learn from them. When your child fails his exam, remind them that they have to study better in the future. Covering up for them would not make them a better person when they grow old.

Educate how to be thankful

Your children become wise beyond their age when you teach them to be grateful and hospitable. Be sure to model how to be courteous by saying "please" and "thank you" at appropriate times. Teach them to share with others what they could so they grow up to be giving adults especially to those in need. 

Teach about the value of hard work

Your children must know that hard work pays off. Let them know that earning money is not easy. They might not be too eager to do household chores, knowing that it could help them earn cash could make them want to help out.

When they buy the things that they want from their hard-earned money, it teaches them to take care of the things they bought. 

Teach your children how to manage allowances

Children who have money management skills could go a long way. Educate them on how to save up for future use, that way, they would know when to limit buying things.

Be consistent when you set the rules

Sometimes you might be tempted to "let it slide just this once," especially when you are too busy. However, it just teaches your children that there are ways they could do to bend the rules. They know that they could get away with things sometimes.
