Michelle Obama Gave Elementary School Kids a Surprise Visit; Kids' Reactions Were Priceless!

Michelle Obama recently visited two D.C. elementary schools which integrated gardening into the school's curriculum. The visits were part of the First Lady's Let's Move Campaign. Students were stunned when they saw the First Lady walk in through the door, but one brave and adorable boy from John Burroughs Elementary School ran towards the First Lady and gave her a nice big hug!

The Feb. 25 visits of Michelle Obama were part of her Let's Move Campaign, where she advocates how gardening can improve one's overall health. Hence, she has chosen two schools, the John Burroughs Elementary School and the Watkins Elementary School, since these schools made gardening an integral part of their curriculum, as what Yahoo News reported.

At John Burroughs Elementary School, the boy who hugged her caught a lot of attention, as his only statement after hugging the First Lady was, "I had to!" The First Lady returned the hug, said, "You had to do it huh," as per Daily Mail report, then went off telling the other excited children that she has heard so much about their garden.

Some children covered their mouths, while others screamed a loud "Yes!" in response to the First Lady's question whether they were surprised. Michelle then helped the kids dig for earthworms and make compost cups.

At the Watkins Elementary School, Michelle said to the surprised students, "You guys have this amazing garden and I'm so proud of you." She also added, "And I want the world to see all the great things you're doing."

She readily made tortillas with them, telling them, "I'm excited, I've never made tortillas like this before!" And like kids who have no qualms about telling people what they feel, even the First Lady, one boy replied, "I've never seen you before!"

One boy even asked, "You know who Joe Biden is, right?" And Michelle Obama graciously responded with a laugh, "I do know who Joe Biden is." She then jokingly continued, "Do you know who Joe Biden is?"

After visiting the two elementary schools, the First Lady proceeded to the house of a couple, who also have a garden and were known to hold workshops and feeding neighbors.  She was given a tour of the couple's garden and called them as "champions" in relation to their efforts.

First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign aims to help in resolving problems related to adolescent obesity. It was launched by the First Lady on Feb. 9, 2010.
