Battle Of Identity Crises: The Importance Of Race And Gender Based On Children's Perspective

Children these days are far more intelligent than the days of the past. Excessive technology and a broad spectrum on social insight provide a lot of things to think and ponder over. Society has many powerful influences towards everyone, even kids are very keen in understanding their gender and racial status.

According to APA  (American Psychological Association), a study has shown that children at their early age showed great interest in understanding and exploring their gender identities. They take deep involvement in understanding their social stratification.

Psychologists conducted researches in association with ILABS (Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences), in which children were seen having a great deal of enthusiasm in understanding the concept of racial and gender identities. But researchers wanted to know more and understand more on how such things work and how children analyze their surroundings and come to a conclusion determining their social place in certain contexts.

As per the University of Washington Today, statistics showed that students belonging to different races, colors and cultures gave most importance to norms based on gender, ethnicity and cultures. Also, the family status was proven to be of pivotal value to these students.

Academic status and athletic values were next in terms of importance. The research found that children aged 7-12 considered gender as a more marked distinction than race. However, both gender and race seemed to have an impact on their personal thoughts and actions.

Race and color were less important, according to the white kids whereas mixed children considered race more vital. The study also highlighted that white and diversely raced-children had different thinking patterns and girls were into families and household in comparison with boys.

Meanwhile. white children seemed to believe more in equality, among different colored people. But the objective of the study was to remain aware of the concepts of social standards and values in the minds of the young children.
