Matthew McConaughey Gets Candid Over His Family & Being 'Captain Fun' For 'Gold'; Will His Kids Join Hollywood?

Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey could have the privileged life in Hollywood as an A-lister but he still choses to settle in Austin. There's an important reason for the father-of-three in choosing Texas as his home base and he recently talked about this, as well as discussed children and family while promoting his new movie 'Gold.'

McConaughey said that home is Texas because that's where his 85-year-old mom Kathleen lives. When his eldest, Levi, was born eight years ago, the actor and his wife Camila Alves decided to make Austin their permanent residence so that their child could grow up near grandma.

Today Kathleen sees Levi and his siblings Vida, 7, and Livingston, 4, almost every weekends. "That's important to the kids, important to Camila and I, important to my mom," McConaughey told ABC News.

McConaughey said that even as he's working on a movie set, he always makes time to go home to Texas because of his family. Sometimes he also brings his children to work with him and he makes this into a teaching moment that could help them decide if they would like to be in the same business as their dad.

"[The kids] see what it's like when this circus comes together and makes movies," the actor said, according to Hello. "If they want to be a part of the storytelling business, I'll open the door, but after that, it's up to them," he added.

McConaughey is known to immerse himself in his roles even during filming downtimes and for the movie "Gold," he got to be Captain Fun at home with his wife and kids. That's because he needed to get fat for his role as Kenny Wells, so they indulged in pizza and milkshakes for six months.

"The whole family loosened up," McConaughey said, CBS 8 reports. "I said, '6 months, you say yes to whatever you want to eat, whatever you want to drink, 24/7."

"Gold" hits theaters on Jan. 27. Watch Matthew McConaughey talk about his family and his latest film in the video below.
