Politics And Parenting: How Are Political Actions Of Parents Affecting Kids?

Donald Trump's election as president of the United States has resurrected political resistance from all social classes. Among those protesting on the streets are parents who sacrifice what little time they have for their children. Unfortunately, their political beliefs can have long-term consequences on their kids.

Some children admit they feel neglected by their parents whenever they attend these protest actions. Those who are brought by their parents to political activities admit they feel awkward. Such is the case of Rachel Fast, the young daughter of Howard Fast, a known novelist and activist.

Fast said she was not amused when she was brought by her parents to a Christmas party, where she saw other children whose parents were in prison. The little girl felt mixed emotions of fear, depression and guilt, as per The Guardian.

"There was a glut of presents underneath the tree that I found depressing and horrifying," Fast said. "It was too much. It was creepy. And the two little boys...I had the simultaneous feeling I should do something for them, and also that they terrified me," she added.

Some parents do not talk to their children about their political views because they think the kids would not understand, as per Kids Health. An interview involving 2,000 children in the United States, however, showed that kids are also interested in the political developments of their country.

Parents are actually better off if they talk to their children about the political situation and how it will affect the family. This way, the kids feel involved and not neglected when parents join political activities.

Children inherit their political sensibilities from their parents, according to Medical Daily. But it would be a mistake for parents to expect their kids will have the same political beliefs as they could be influenced by other factors, like the media. Despite this, it is essential to establlsh communication between the parent and child when it comes to political discussions.
